What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure specifically designed for increasing a woman's breast size. The procedure involves surgically placing FDA approved breast implants under a woman's existing breasts, either submuscular or subglandular.

There are currently two forms of breast implants that are approved by the FDA: saline breast implants and silicone gel implants. Both offer their own list of pros and cons. To learn more about these types of implants, please read our correponsding pages, or visit Dr. Ambe's website.

How can a woman benefit from breast augmentation surgery?

It really depends on her individual goals. She may want to simply increase her breast size or perhaps balance out her body by having larger, firmer breasts.

Ultimately, the goal of any plastic surgery procedure is about improving a person's self confidence and self esteem. Improved self confidence (from any source) can drastically improve a person's level of life enjoyment.

Who much does the procedure cost?

Cost will vary between surgeons. The primary factors that will affect the cost of your procedure are:

  • The skill and experience of your surgeon. Obviously, you want a surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation, has extensive experience, and has a large database of 'before and after' photographs that you can review. It's also recommended that you review photographs of women who are near your age range.
  • Silicone or Saline? Cost does vary between implants. Saline implants are generally less expensive than silicone gel.
  • Is the procedure performed at a hospital or within the surgeon's office? In the interest of your safety, it's always best to have your surgery performed at a hospital.
  • There are several other items that will add to the cost of your implants, including anethesia, surgical garments, prescriptions, pre and post operative care.
  • Any complications that are involved with your particular situation will increase the overall cost of your procedure.

What is the first step towards having surgery?

You need to learn as much as you can about breast augmentation. The internet is a great start for finding information, but you shouldn't base your decision strictly on what you find online.

You will need to schedule an initial consultation with a board certified, practicing plastic surgeon. During that consultation, you will be able to ask any question you might have regarding the procedure itself, the recovery process, and any potential risks associated with the surgery and the implants.
